Edo Period History

Publications and Sales

THE ETSUKO AND JOE PRICE COLLECTION contains over 500 Japanese art objects, mostly from the Edo period. Begun in the early 1950's, the collection under the guidance of the Price's has grown to include screens, scrolls, lacquer, fans, baskets and numerous other types of objects created from the fifteenth century to the present.

The Shin'enKan Foundation was formed as a privately operating foundation with its primary focus upon education and the appreciation of the culture of the Edo Period of Japanese painting.

The word Shin'enKan originates from an old Chinese poem. It was appropriated by the artist Ito Jakuchu (1715 - 1800) and used as the name of his studio. It translates as "The House of the Far Away Heart," or in other words a house for losing your heart.

Through the links at the side of the page, you can visit a database of a small selection of the more than 500 objects from the Paintings collection. We've also provided samples of Contemporary Netsuke from another collection. If you are interested in an overview of the history of the Edo Period, please click on the History link. The complete collections of Edo Period Painting and Contemporary Netsuke have been published in both print and on CD-ROM, and are available in the Publications portion of the site. Because of the constraints of download time, the images on this site are less than a quarter of the size they are on the CD's and highly compressed.
