"In the 50's and early 60's I did not "collect" art, but occasionally bought paintings that pleased me. At first I was not even conscious that they were Japanese. I had accumulated art for nearly ten years before someone asked why I collected only six artists from a 50-year period out of an entire 2000-year history of Japanese painting. I had never even realized this! The focus of my collection arose serendipitously from taste, not intent. Upon being shown a book of paintings by Ito Jakuchu, for instance, I dreamed of someday actually seeing one in real life-only to be told that several were already in my collection, purchased unawares since I could not decipher the signatures". - Joe Price
