Animals

THE TWELVE ZODIAC ANIMALS, TIGER, BULL, RABBIT, Monkey, Horse, Dragon, Rat, Ram, Boar, Dog, Snake, and Rooster play an important part of Japanese life. An artist could become famous by just being able to depict any of these animals in a superior fashion. Jakuchu became best known for his roosters and Sosen is always associated with monkeys.

People

FIGURE PAINTING IN JAPAN WAS QUITE COMMON. WHEN someone thinks of figures in Japanese art, they probably first recall the wood block print. There are no such prints in this collection; instead we concentrated on original paintings, many by the same artists who produced the prints. It is astounding to recall that in the 1960's an 1970's, the prices for a single wood block print were generally higher than for an original painting by the same artist.

Landscapes

PREDOMINANTLY, LANDSCAPES IN JAPAN FORM background for everyday activities by people. Artists sometimes try to express the scenic wonders of their country, and often use landscape as a storytelling device. Mt. Fuji played a large role in Japanese stories but it was flowers which brought the challenge to Japanese artists.
