Middle Edo

(1700 - 1800)

THE MIDDLE EDO PERIOD SAW THE EMERGENCE OF new wealth absorbed by the merchant class. This resulted in new patrons for artists who did not require legends and historical themes, but rather asked for only beauty (such as their gardens, animals, or girlfriends). It became an art to just delight the eye. The great artists to emerge from this period were Okyo, Jakuchu, Shohaku, and Rosetsu.
