IN LATE EDO THE KANO SCHOOL DECLINED AS THE Samurai lost his wealth, and the Rimpa and Ukiyoe schools climbed to new heights in skill and originality. The painting became harder edged and more spectacular with Hoitsu and Kiitsu taking the forefront. Ukiyoe painting, though rarer than the wood block print, also became more important.
