Commentary |
The asymmetrical composition as well as the extremely skillful handling of the lacquer make this painting very striking. Lacquer painting on paper is extraordinarily difficult to execute because the lacquer will "grab." Zeshin was the most skilled in this technique, and here, in the feathers of the eagle, he even imitates a rapid, dry brushstroke. - JDP The artist painted on washi with lacquer techniques. The effect is quite different from traditionally used materials such as paper and silk. He tried to incorporate his knowledge of lacquer techniques with that of painting. Technically, a glossy surface added a mysterious quality to the painting. Compositionally, Zeshin left a negative space in the center by placing the surging waves, the bank and the hawk around the edges of the painting. Zeshin masterfully captured the action of a moment of nature and froze it dramatically in this composition. Signature "Eighty-one okina, Tairyukyo, seals "Zeshin." |
