 Commentary

The freedom and spontaneity of the brush is impressive; there are no wasted strokes and the control is marvelous. According to the box, which was signed, this was painted at a party, a common occurrence in Japan; as always, there is no such thing as a free lunch.- JDP

Depicted is a Daruma facing the wall meditating with his eyes widely opened, mouth firmly closed, and a determination on his bearded face. Ink is boldly used and part of the ear rings and robes are accented with gold paint.

There is no signature for this painting; however, the container for the painting has his writing stating that it was painted in June of Meiji 21, (1880). (Kobayashi)
